Egg Thrown at Wembanyama Triggers Condemnation as Knicks Fan Violence Escalates
Victor Wembanyama was struck by an egg thrown by fans outside a New York City hotel following the San Antonio Spurs' Game 4 loss in the NBA Finals on June 10, 2026, footage circulating on social media showed. Security personnel were escorting the Spurs star into the building when the projectile was thrown. The incident is the latest in a series of violent episodes involving Knicks supporters during this year's Finals.
ESPN host Mike Greenberg, a New York native, condemned the behavior directly on his show "Get Up" the following morning. "If you're throwing eggs at Victor Wembanyama and beating up people... threatening... or doing anything to people who are wearing Spurs jerseys, just know that you are a disgrace," Greenberg said. "You're not disgracing this city, you're disgracing yourself and everyone who knows you." Wembanyama had already addressed an earlier wave of fan misconduct after Game 3, stating: "We can't forget it's a game. I am all for passion, but [with] the respect of each other. It's unacceptable."
Fan disorder has shadowed this Finals series from its early stages. Following the Spurs' 115-111 victory in Game 3, multiple brawls erupted near a watch party at Bryant Park in Midtown Manhattan. The New York Police Department arrested 21 people - 13 for disorderly conduct and eight on charges including assaulting officers, criminal possession of weapons and menacing. Separately, social media footage from around the same period appeared to show Knicks supporters physically confronting Spurs fans, with some having their jerseys torn from them. During Game 2 celebrations near Madison Square Garden, additional arrests were made and at least one police officer was reported injured.
The Knicks entered Game 4 trailing the series and completed a 29-point comeback - the largest in NBA Finals history, according to the draft - to take a 3-1 series lead. New York is making its first Finals appearance since 1999, when the franchise lost that series to the San Antonio Spurs. The city's last championship dates to 1973. The series now shifts to San Antonio for Game 5 on Saturday, June 13, 2026, with Game 6 scheduled to return to New York on Tuesday if necessary.
