Fernando Mendoza receives undergraduate degree at Cal MBA ceremony

Fernando Mendoza, the quarterback selected first overall by the Las Vegas Raiders in the 2026 NFL Draft, walked across the stage during Cal’s MBA commencement on Saturday to receive his undergraduate degree in business administration and management.

Mendoza had missed Cal’s undergraduate ceremony earlier in the week while beginning his professional career. Haas School of Business dean Jenny Chatman introduced him during the MBA event, noting that he had completed the degree while also pursuing graduate studies at Indiana.

Mendoza led Indiana to an undefeated national championship season in 2025 under head coach Curt Cignetti. The Raiders list veteran Kirk Cousins on their quarterback depth chart, with head coach Klint Kubiak indicating a plan for Cousins to start Week 1 while Mendoza develops.

Mendoza declined to join his Indiana teammates at a White House ceremony honoring the national title, citing his commitment to the Raiders. President Donald Trump stated that Mendoza had called to explain his absence.
