Former NFL cornerback Darrell Green, a Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee who played from 1983 to 2002 exclusively for the Washington Redskins, will participate in U.S. flag football national team trials in Chula Vista, California.[1][2]
Now 64, Green qualified for the trials through USA Football's digital combine. The event is set for November 7-10, 2024, at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Chula Vista.[1][3]
"Darrell qualified through our digital combine. He’s later in his career than the other trials participants, but his testing results were impressive," USA Football senior director of high performance and national teams Callie Brownson said. "Our coaches and staff felt he deserved a closer look."[1]
Green was selected by the Redskins in the first round, 28th overall, of the 1983 NFL draft out of Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Over 20 seasons and 295 games, he recorded 54 interceptions, six of which he returned for touchdowns. He won Super Bowls XXII and XXVI, made seven Pro Bowls and earned one first-team All-Pro selection in 1986 before his induction into the Hall of Fame in 2008.[2][4]
Green aims for a roster spot on the U.S. men's national team ahead of the 2026 IFAF Flag World Championship in Amberg, Germany, with flag football slated to debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.[1][5][6]
The U.S. men's flag football team has won every IFAF World Championship since the inaugural tournament in 2008.[7]
About 100 athletes, including former WNBA player Loryn Goodwin and ex-Florida State quarterback O'Mariah Gordon, are competing in the trials.[1]
Green said on USA Football's Instagram: "I’m going to give it my best and I’ll walk away with my head up, either way."[1]
